Three regions cover almost everything Indonesia has to offer a birder — each can be booked on its own, or combined into a longer trip.

Sulawesi

Sulawesi and its satellite islands hold more than 300 bird species, over 100 of them found nowhere else on Earth — the highest concentration of endemics anywhere in Indonesia. Prime ground runs through Tangkoko, Tomohon, Bogani Nani Wartabone, Gunung Ambang, Nantu Forest, and Lore Lindu, where all five of Sulawesi's endemic kingfisher species are within reach on a single trip.

Halmahera (North Maluku)

Halmahera is home to three true birds-of-paradise — Wallace's Standardwing, the Paradise-crow, and the Common Paradise Kingfisher — alongside a run of Moluccan endemics found only within this island group. Birding grounds run through Sofifi, Weda, Sidangoli, Foli, the Buli roadside, and Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park.

Papua & Raja Ampat

Papua is the heartland of the birds-of-paradise — Western Parotia, Magnificent, Superb, King, Lesser, Red, Wilson's, and Twelve-wired among them — found from the lowland forest of Nimbokrang, up into the Arfak Mountains, and out to Waigeo Island in Raja Ampat, where both Wilson's and Red Birds-of-Paradise display.
