This is a starting point, not a fixed package. Every trip I plan gets adjusted to your dates, pace, and budget — swap days, add rest time, or go deeper on any one leg. Think of this as a sample of how a Sumba route can come together, not a set menu.
Settle in on the west coast
Fly into Tambolaka, transfer to the coast, and ease into the pace of the island. First stop: Weekuri Lagoon, a tidal saltwater pool tucked behind the cliffs — a good, low-key way to shake off travel days.
Clan villages of West Sumba
Visit the peaked-roof clan villages of Ratenggaro and Wainyapu — traditional houses built around megalithic stone tombs, still very much lived in rather than preserved for show.
Wild horses and savannah hills
Head inland toward Waikabubak, through rolling grassland where Sumba's semi-wild horses roam. Golden-hour light on these hills is some of the best on the island.
South coast surf breaks
A day on Sumba's famous south coast — home to some of Indonesia's best and least crowded waves. Non-surfers can just as easily spend the day on the empty stretches of sand around it.
Lapopu and the inland waterfalls
A slower day around Sumba's tiered waterfalls and a few more villages on the way back, with room to double back to anything from earlier in the week that's worth a second look.
Fly out
Transfer back to Tambolaka for your onward flight — or extend and connect this route into a longer trip through Flores or Komodo.
Want to see how this could stretch to 8–10 days, run in the opposite direction, or connect onward to Komodo? That's exactly the kind of thing I adjust once I know your dates.
